SANZHI DISTRICT — I'm not one for temples. Living in Taiwan for 5 years has desensitized me to them. And when it comes to photography I've never been good as shooting them. I'll occasionally get a decent lantern shot but those are far and few.
But when I heard that there was a temple made of coral I was shocked. The value of what's inside must be astronomical. And as more people learn about this place in the international community I expect outrage to follow. I'm going to reserve judgement for now though and just show the place.
There was this small tunnel going around the back of the tunnel completely full of coral. But since I wasn't worshiping it would have been rude for me to go inside. There was also a humongous amber gemstone in the middle that people would rub for good luck.
I wasn't really paying attention but my girlfriend said that people outside the temple were really aggressive about selling stuff. She got the feeling that this place was just a bit of a scam.
Who knows what the future of this temple holds. It's quite far into the countryside and not easy to access for tourists. So maybe they also have a sense of urgency to make this place profitable. There was also a guy there filming a documentary about environmentally unfriendly religious practices in Taiwan. There are quite a few. And given the state of the oceans right now a temple made entirely of coral will not make people happy.
